David A. Day Papers 1874-1897.

There are a total of nine letters written by David A. Day to Miss Florence A. Elicker. The first letters were written in the United States: one just prior to Day's ordination in April 1874, and four written during an 1883 furlough in conjunction with a visit to the Elicker family. The four remaining letters, 1887-1890, were written from the Muhlenberg Mission, Monrovia, Liberia, Africa. Folder 4 also contains a listing of David Day's articles/letters that appeared as the "Life in Africa" Series, in The Lutheran Missionary Journal, 1886-1898.

David A. Day was born February 17, 1851, near Bendersville (Adams County), Pennsylvania, to an indentured farmer and his wife. As a young boy, David himself was sold and served as a stable boy. At fourteen he joined the Union Army. After only eight months of active duty he was honorably discharged. In 1869, Day entered the Missionary Institute of the General Synod (later to become Susquehanna University) at Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, where he received a Bachelor's Degree...
